Web Design For Small Business – 5 Factors You Must Incorporate

As a small business, your web design is important to your success. Also, as a small business, you have the advantage of being able to change your website to suit your needs. You will be able to update to keep up with changing market conditions. Amidst all this change, however, there are a few constants that will always need to be in place. The content within these constants may change, but the overall needs will not change.

Ease Of Use

People will not stay if your site is not easy to use. If the navigation links are placed where it is hard to find, the average viewer will not want to stick around to figure it out. You could be losing business if navigation is not immediately obvious. Like other big sites use one-click for some transactions, you should think of ways to give your visitors a one-click solution to the information they desire.

Color To Suit Your Audience

Different audiences have different colors that move them to purchase. Do some research to find out what color moves your audience the most. In business, blue is the color because it is the one that gets professional results. If you are not sure what color to start with, blue is always a good choice. But other colors may produce better for you. Once you start getting quantifiable results, you can tweak and compare results.

SEO

SEO is important. You need to research the keywords you want to target. These need to be words that your potential clients use. Once you have your list of highly targeted terms, you need to make sure they are placed strategically in important places on your site. These places include the title, links to other pages on your site, and bolded words. While you do need to consider the importance of having your keywords for every 100 words, you do not want to write with that in mind. You still need to write with the reader in mind.

Graphics

Graphics are good, but if they are too loud, it can distract and turn people away. These should work with your carefully chosen color scheme. The topics pictures should coincide with the purpose of your site.

Purpose

When a visitor visits your site, it should be apparent within the first three seconds what the purpose is. They should know what it is that you want them to do. So, if it is for them to purchase a product from you, it should be apparent. You should not have other things besides the products to purchase to distract the viewer. If you are offering a service, you should not be offering non-relevant products.

The above five will always be important. The content that they drive, however, will change with time. You need to constantly monitor and adjust to keep up with the needs of your customers and potential customers. For everything you do, try to quantify the results as much as you can. That way you can say without a doubt that this or that change made a difference. Any positive increase in your profit margin is worth this extra effort.

Want to create custom web page design?

It’s EASY to learn to create sales pages that sell.

Most people use Adobe Dreamweaver. It’s the standard. You can also get by with Microsoft Expression Web. In Design Dashboard we taught Evrsoft First Page, a free html editor software that’s pretty robust.

Here are the basic html code tutorial you need to learn:

Insert table to web page.

Center.

Add web page background image.

Insert picture.

Insert graphics.

That’s the basic Dreamweaver tips and tutorials.

Basic, basic, basic stuff.

Let me ask you a question: Can you think of ONE THING your target audience or market REALLY wants to have, see or know?

Can you think of ONE THING?

If you can, write 10 bullet points on it.

Open your HTML editor software.

Insert table. Go to Insert menu > choose Table or press Ctrl+Alt+T

Center.

Type web page headline. Select font. Choose dark blue as color, adjust your font size.

Type bullet points.

You gotta be able to know html insert tables, position graphics, select font sizes. I think it’s really NICE to know how to screen cap a subhead font and then insert the image. See The Basic HTML Tutorial for HTML useful codes.

Also, you should know how to put a nice shadow around your table. That’s a bit more complicated but not bad.

Squeeze Page? Don’t have a name squeeze page? You open your html editor. Insert table. Center. Fill out web form info at Aweber, Getresponse or automateyourwebsite. Go to “code” area of html editor.

PASTE and save.

Now you have a name squeeze! OMG! It didn’t cost you an arm and a leg either. You did it yourself.

Have you LOOKED at the Double Your Dating name squeeze?

http://www.doubleyourdating.com

If you CAN’T DO that, you need practice. Seriously. Insert table. Center. Add code. Save and done.

Oops, I forgot. To dress it up add a web page headline and web page bullet points. Maybe even a picture of what they get. The free pdf ebook download you are offering or your report cover you can outsource, although Design Dashboard shows how to do them too.

KEY POINTS: HTML Know-how

1. There is a set of html skills you need to learn
2. These are fairly html basic skills
3. You need confidence and proficiency in doing them
4. That comes through practice
5. You do NOT gotta do all the super ninja stuff to sell and make money.
6. You gotta do the basics
7. Most people AVOID the pain of learning the html basics and focus on super ninja stuff
8. You go super NINJA AFTER you have your basics in place
9. Always work on the basics and never forsake them
10. Gurus have a vested interest in selling super ninja stuff since people are totally enamored with buying bright, shiny objects which is MUCH more exciting than buying something that teaches the basics
11. Grasshopper says you don’t need to spend $5000 to learn the basics. But you can if you have the money and want to. Nothing wrong with it.

A lot of people will spend $3000 to $5000 for advanced methods (or even basic ones) before they’ll spend a few weeks (or less) learning the basics.

I mean, if you can’t format TEXT, insert tables, format and email, set up a web form for your opt ins, and do the basic stuff, I question spending those huge fees for advanced marketing.

I totally and completely believe in education and training. But there is a sequence to things. I think you START with the basics. You don’t start with advanced ninja marketing stuff.

And yeah, I KNOW some say just to outsource it. Fine, if you have the budget. But even then, you’ll STILL pull your hair out waiting for a freelancer to do what YOU could have done in 2 minutes with fairly minimal knowledge.

Don’t get me wrong. I use freelancers and employees. But in the beginning I did it myself.

There IS a time and a place for outsourcing. And when you launch that first site, yeah, you might wanna use a freelance graphic designer to do something slick.

Still doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to put together a quick and dirty page or graphic yourself. Or edit the font, text or picture that a designer sends you.

You have to LEARN to see a little deeper sometimes.

Because they take time and cost money. Plus, they’re a pain.

What do you have to create?

* Banner ads

* Sales letters

* Graphic design

* Affiliate site

* Web site

* Ebook cover

* Upsells

* Downsells

* Ezine ads

* Google ads

* Blogs

* Facebook sites

Would you rather find the success you’re seeking in 6 months or 1 year? Which do you prefer?

If you want to do it in 1/2 the time, if you want to be on the 6 month program and not the 1 year program, then I’m going to share with you three simple rules to cut your learning curve by 50% or more, speed your progress enormously and get you the results you want many times faster.

Rule one: You Can’t Create From A Vacuum

I’m a writer by trade.

And the hardest thing to do is to write from a vacuum. If you start and have no input but expect to crank out output, you’re in a pickle.

That’s why when you write or create, you build yourself a fodder package.

This can be samples of other writings, quotes, materials, articles, web sites you print, books, pages ripped out of books, downloaded pdfs — anything that will prime your brain when you begin the creation process.

Rule Two: Always Have A Model

When I do consultations or the rare event where I critique items for my customers, I notice a trend: Almost no one follows a proven model.

They omit obvious factors used in almost every successful sales letter, blog, banner ad, upsell, Google ad or creative you see online.

This goes hand-in-hand with rule one. You can’t create in a vacuum. So build up a collection of sales letters and web sites you KNOW work.

Then, when you go to create YOURS, make sure you incorporate all the successful elements you see in the model or models. I’m always taking screen caps of web page guarantees graphic logo, headlines, creative web page designs, web graphic bullet points, good web design tips and webpage order forms free sample that I can use as examples on our next project.

What you do is COMPARE what you’re creating against your models, your benchmarks, your examples in order to make sure that what you create is up to speed. I don’t see a lot of people doing this.

What I see the vast majority of people doing is putting a small amount of effort into the end result and not doing their homework.

Plain and simple: The people who succeed in this business do their homework. Those who don’t, don’t. But this isn’t some arduous task.

You do it while sitting on the sofa watching TV and during commercial breaks. You surf web sites and save good ones to your hard drive. Or take a screen cap webpage of the best elements.

Then you take your MODEL or MODELS and you print them out. Hang out on a lawn chair or go down to your fav coffee shop and read over them. Study them. Sink your teeth into the copy, the headline, the psychology.

This is EASY work. It’s actually fun. But it’s extremely important.

Rule Three: Make A Side-By-Side Comparison

After you create whatever you have to create, whether it’s a sample banner ad webdesigns, sales letter, graphic design, web site, how to make a graphic design sample cover letterebook cover or anything else, do a side-by-side comparison. Literally print out your web site, sales letter, banner ads, ebook covers or whatever else it is.

Compare YOURS to your model or models side-by-side.

Look at the length, the size, the colors, the balance. Ask others to compare the two and tell you which they feel is most effective. I see people creating sales letters, web sites,website designs, ebooks and sales processes without doing their homework. It’s no huge secret which sales letters do really well online.

Grab yourself one of those and compare it to YOURS.

But short of that, do your searches on Google. Find other best web sites you know to be successful and compare YOUR creation with what you see.

My message today is simple:

* Model success

* Do your homework

* Make side-by-side comparisons

Typically, when someone asks me to critique their sales letter, blog or web site, I can tell in 10 seconds — they didn’t do their homework. They worked without a successful model in front of their face.

WRONG!

You get your models. You stick them in front of your face. You use them as fodder for your creativity. You don’t blatantly rip off. But you make darned sure you include the successful elements and components. And that there’s a modicum of resemblance in a side-by- side comparison.

If you don’t do your research, you’re totally ignoring the immense amount of money and time others have spent getting a model that works.

Real world is this: 9 out of 10 things you try don’t work.

That’s real world. Anyone who tells you otherwise is blowing smoke up your ying yang. So do YOU want to be the one who goes out and tries the 9 things that don’t work? Why not find the 1 that DOES work then use it as a model. Now, blatantly ripping people off can be illegal, is in bad taste and is NOT what I’m referring to.

But modelling and emulating is good. Finding all the successful components or elements in something and making sure you use them is GOOD!

People ask me to critique sales letters that are about one tenth the length of any successful sales letter you can find at a similar price point. And they wonder what I think.

It’s simple: I think the person didn’t do their homework.

Do your homework.

Model success.

You have something that is NOT working, NOT selling, NOT converting, NOT putting bacon on the table? Start out by comparing it to what you KNOW as a fact works. That’s a very good starting point.

Compare.

Find the differences.

Make changes.

Test again.

“Oh look! There are web design testimonials here! Oh look! The web design bonuses have more than one sentence of illustration. Oh look! The bonuses have illustrations.

Oh look! There’s a box certificate graphic design for the guarantee. Oh look! They have 10X the raw number of bullet points I have!”

Oh look!

See, that’s the power of comparison.

It’s called “Oh look” marketing.

And it doesn’t cost you a dime.

“OMG (Oh My Gosh) their headline has numbers an specifics in it and mine doesn’t! OMG, their banner has a numerical benefit and mine doesn’t. OMG, this super power web site has a sales letter that prints out to 25 pages and mine prints out to TWO!”

OMG!

If you do this, you will at LEAST cut your learning curve by 50%. That means you can hit pay dirt in 6 months instead of 1 year. OMG, their sales letter has subheads and mine doesn’t!

OMG, their sales letter has a deadline for acting today and mine
doesn’t!

OMG!

See, all those OMG’s save you an enormous amount of time learning them on your own by trial and error. You don’t need to reinvent marketing. Marketing has already been invented. What you need to do is to have the smarts to learn from others who have gone before you.

I’ll also add that the best investment you make is in your own education, learning from those who have gone before you, tried tons of things, cut out the 90% that don’t work and share the 10% that do work.

I would be happy to tell you how much I love Design Dashboard – online web design courses.

When I got the course I was a total “newbie”, but Design Dashboard takes you by the hand, step-by-step, and SHOWS you how to do everything. Lisa’s videos were so clear and easy to understand, that I stopped being intimidated. When you’re new, you have no idea of what you don’t know. Design Dashboard takes you through each phase of setting-up a website, shows you where to get any necessary tools for free and(MOST IMPORTANTLY) SHOWS HOW TO USE THOSE TOOLS!

I had never even heard about PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS, much less used it. All those intimidating buttons and icons become clear as day when someone shows you what they stand for and how to make them work.

I finished my first website, with the classiest-looking header you can imagine. My husband was impressed, my sister (an artist) was impressed, my adult children and their spouses were impressed, and miracle-of-miracles, my grandchildren were impressed. They think I can do anything now! Thank you, Marlon, for a terrific program that set me on the right path to building my own websites, rather than paying lots of money to someone else.

Just imagine, I’m a Webmaster, thanks to you!
